IKEA Recalls 35 Million Dressers After Child Deaths

The furniture store Ikea has issued a recall for more than 35 million chests/dressers following reports of 6 children dying as a result of them.

The furniture giant issued the recall, as well as refunds, for the chests and dressers after six children died when those pieces of furniture reportedly fell over on them.  The refunds are being issued to customers in Canada and the United States and include their popular Malm furniture line.  The pieces in question were manufactured between January 2002 and June 2016.

Partial refunds are being issued for furniture that was manufactured prior to 2002 and free wall-anchor kits are being offered to all customers wanting to keep the recalled dressers/chests.

While the wall-anchor kits are being offered, Ikea is discouraging continued use of the products.  In a recently issued statement, Ikea stated: “Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest and dresser that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access.”

In 2015, the company began to offer the wall-anchor kits after one child from Pennsylvania and another from Washington state died from the pieces falling over.  More recently, in February 2016, a 22-month-old child in Minnesota died as the result of a Malm furniture piece falling on him.

In total, Ikea says it has 23 cases of either deaths or injuries to children as a result of Malm chests and dressers falling over.  Of the over 40 reported cases, there have been 6 deaths and 17 injuries, with an additional 3 deaths and 19 injuries attributed to other models of Ikea chests and drawers.
