MARCH IS BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS MONTH 2021

This March, Alpert Schreyer is proud to participate in Brain Injury Awareness Month, an awareness campaign that has been observed for more than 30 years, about as long as we have represented accident victims with brain injuries in civil court cases.

According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), there are currently over 5.3 million United States residents living with permanent brain injury-related disabilities. For Brain Injury Awareness Month 2021, the BIAA is focusing its efforts on the #MoreThanMyBrainInjury campaign to:

  • Reduce stigma;
  • Highlight the diversity of these injuries;
  • Call attention to the demographics of the community;
  • Increase public understanding of these injuries as a chronic condition; and
  • Improve care and support for the community.

Our lawyers at Alpert Schreyer invite you to join us in observing Brain Injury Awareness Month 2021 by doing your part, and as always, the first step to making a change is to get educated on the issue at hand.

Get the Facts About Brain Injuries

There are two primary types of brain injuries:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs): when the brain is injured due to external force or trauma, which may include both open and closed wounds sustained during falls, assaults, traffic accidents, etc.
  • Non-traumatic brain injuries (NTBIs): when the brain is injured because of internal factors, which may include oxygen deprivation, toxic exposure, etc.

TBIs and NTBIs fall under the umbrella of “acquired brain injuries” (ABIs), a term that covers all head injuries that are not hereditary, degenerative, or present or induced at birth.

Treatment and Recovery

Unfortunately, the brain cannot regenerate destroyed brain cells, so recovery focuses on rewiring different parts of the brain to take over the functions of the dead cells. As such, many individuals with these injuries are able to recover to at least some extent. It is important to note that the sooner a person obtains medical treatment for an ABI, the more effective treatment will be. For this reason, it is crucial to know the symptoms of ABIs.

The signs and symptoms of an ABI include:

  • Persistent or worsening headaches
  • Feeling weak, numb, or uncoordinated
  • Slurring one’s speech
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Feelings of confusion or restlessness
  • Behaving unusually, such as feeling irregularly agitated
  • Losing consciousness
  • Seizures

Supporting the Cause

Now that you have read up on the basics of ABIs, we challenge you to continue educating yourself on the issue and to share what you have learned with your friends, family, and acquaintances. Together, we can reduce stigma, increase awareness, and push for improved care and support for those living with ABIs.
