BMW Develops Self-Driving Motorcycle to Study Advanced Safety Systems

We’ve all heard the hype about self-driving cars and semi-autonomous vehicles with advanced safety systems like auto-emergency braking, electronic stability control, and lane-keeping assist. These vehicles purportedly make driving safer by taking over control of the vehicle if an adverse event is imminent or automating the task of driving entirely.

Until now, manufacturers have limited self-driving vehicle technology and advanced safety systems to their cars and trucks. BMW Motorrad (the company’s motorcycle division), however, recently unveiled a self-driving motorcycle that can start itself, accelerate, navigate turns, and even deploy its own kickstand and come to a stop. Unfortunately for enthusiasts, BMW has no plans to make the vehicle available for consumers. Instead, it developed the self-driving motorcycle in order to study safety systems to make riding more comfortable and safer.

According to a Stefan Hans, a Motorrad safety engineer, “the prototype helps us to expand our knowledge about the vehicle’s dynamics so that we can classify the rider’s behavior and determine if a future situation will become dangerous or not. If so, we can inform, warn or intervene directly.”

Even with Safety Systems, Motorcycle Accident Can Still Cause Serious Injuries

Riding a motorcycle is an inherently dangerous activity, and motorcyclists expose themselves to a risk of serious injury every time they take to the road. Because they lack the protections of a vehicle body, accidents can throw them from their bikes and slam them into the ground or another vehicle, often resulting in severe bodily injuries, including:

In most cases, these kinds of injuries leave victims with significant economic and non-economic losses, including medical expenses, lost income, lost quality of life, and physical and emotional pain and suffering. If you have found yourself in this position, there is some good news; if the accident in which you sustained your injuries was the result of the negligence of another person, you’re likely entitled to compensation for all of your accident-related losses.

So how do you know if your accident was the result of negligence? The best way to find out is to talk to an attorney as soon as possible. At Alpert Schreyer, we will evaluate your case at no cost to you and let you know whether we think you have a claim. Some examples of driver negligence that can lead to a serious, injury-causing motorcycle accident include:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Following too closely
  • Failing to yield the right of way
  • Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol
